Ally Theatre Company is holding auditions for their upcoming production of Jennifer Mendenhall's #poolparty, directed by Angelisa Gillyard.
All roles are paid.
RAY SR. (Black- or African American)
Deceased grandfather. In the flashbacks, he might be in his 40s, but when he addresses the audience, he needs to have the gravitas of a man in his 60s, very respected by his children. A working class man, served in Vietnam, intelligent and wise, aware. Accepts the way things are, calculates when it is within his power to change them.
RAY (Black- or African-American)
Father of Roya. A mainstream man. Served in Iraq, the first war. Keeps his head down, doesn't make waves, hews to tradition, loves to grill and feed people. Lives in the suburbs, has a pool. Decent government job, waiting for retirement, watching his expenditures. Roya's mother died in childbirth, he has never remarried, dates when it's safe, but not really worth it.
REGINA (Black- or African-American)**
Stepped in to help raise Roya from the start. Lives near Ray. History teacher in high school. Cautious, investigative, intelligent, sees all sides of the argument, sometimes drinks too much wine after doing research. Single, because really who has the time for that. Her armor is her knowledge of history, which is both a boon and a curse.
**THE ROLE OF REGINA IS CAST. WE ARE SEEKING UNDERSTUDIES FOR WEEKDAY MATINEES
RO (Black- or African-American)
Lives in the family home, within earshot of the pool. Slow moving, deep, hurt, music fanatic with extensive catalogue, precise memory of release dates for Motown, R & B, on up through hip hop. Mailman. Keeps to himself.
RICKY (Black- or African-American)
Humor is his armor. Lives in a condo downtown. Might be living with a partner, might be gay. Sharp, playful, irreverent mind, interested in the new trends. Works in IT. Ignores rules he doesn't like. Baby of the family, would like the respect of his siblings.
ROYA (Black- or African-American)
College junior, two years to go on a swimming scholarship. Talented, gifted swimmer. Her uncles and aunt also contribute to her expenses, of which she is aware. Smart, a bit of a loner, and overwhelmed by the evidence of violent racism on social media. Watches too many video clips. Struggling to find her balance.
Actors will play multiple roles of various ethnicities and age, so flexibility and character skills are a plus.
The subject matter is weighty, but the treatment is tough and sometimes irreverent, and often playful.
